Dyeing class for beginners (2) / Curs de vopsit textile pentru incepatori (2)

Now it is time to reveal how my dyed fabrics look like.

The fabrics (most of them!) look very much like the solid batiks I can buy in the Netherlands or in internet shops. I think this is the result of how I handled the fabric and the length of the dyeing process.

During my first attempts to dye, I took care to mix the dyes carefully before I put the fabric into the soda ash liquid. The color is more uniform. In the picture below you can see my first attempt (using 50 ml soda ah and 10 ml cool yellow / Acid Lemon).

But even in this case I did not get an uniform color. This has to do with the laws of physics (gravity), which makes the liquid to settle on the bottom of the bag and to dye more intensely the fabric on the botton - as opposed to the fabric on the top.

If you want a more uniform color (solid), you have to use a different way of keeping the fabric in contact with the coloured soda ash liquid.

For these fabric I used an intermediate technique: I mixed the colors very well, but I squeezed the plastic bag less carefully, when I put the fabric into the bag. I allowed the fabric to soak as it was in the bag.

The teacher told us that we must let the dyed fabric in the plastic bag for 24 hours, maximum 2-3 days. Because I did not have time to rinse and wash the fabrics until 48 hours later, the colouring process went on.
The colouring liquid run down to the bottom of the plastic bag, where I got much more deeper color on some the folds of the fabric. To be more precise, on those folds which were on the bottom of the plastic bag (see below).

I suppose that this effect is less prominent if you put the fabric in other type of plastic bags, like these below. You get more uniform colors, if you have less folds and crinkles in the fabric. At least this is what I think.

Look what I got / Uitati-va ce am obtinut:

1) Effects due to changes in the quantity of different primary colors usedEfecte datorate proportiilor diferite de culori primare folosite

9,7 ml Golden Yellow + 0,3 ml Scarlet Red + 50 ml soda ash

9 ml Golden Yellow + 1 ml Scarlet Red + 50 ml soda ash

7,5 ml Golden Yellow + 2,5 ml Scarlet Red + 50 ml soda ash

2. Very visible marbled effects / Efecte marmorate foarte vizibile

Here the different primary colors were not very well mixed. At least not as throughly as during the exercise nr. 1 (10 ml yellow Acid Lemon). The primary colours mix or separate on the fabric and allow you to get very strong effects.

b) very strong contrasts / material vopsit prezinta contraste mari intre culori sau nuante

3) Only one color (different quantities) and soda ash / O singura culoare (in diferite cantitati) si soda ash

My first conclusions are / Primele mele concluzii:

1. If you want a more uniform color:
* mix the dyes carefully before you put the fabric into the dyeing liquid
* squeeze the plastic bg carefully and longer to allow the fabric to soak well
* squeeze the plastic bags during the dyeing process as well (every couple of hours): you will prevent the liquid to sink to the bottom of the plastic bag and dye more intensely the fabric on the bottom.
Or use a different method to dye.

Daca doriti o culoare mai uniforma:
* amestecati vopselele / vopseua cu soda ash inainte de a pune materialul in lichid
* dupa ce ati bagat materialul in sacul de plastic strangeti sacul intre degeta mai mult timp, ca sa va asigurati ca material s-a imbibat bine cu vopsea si in mod uniform
* v-as sfatui sa repetati acest proces si in timp ce materialul trebuie sa stea in lichid timp de 24 ore (sau mai mult): in acest fel evitati sa se lase lichidul pe fundul sacului si sa vopseasca mai intens acea parte de material cu care ramane in contact.
Sau folositi o alta metoda de vopsit

2. If you want more contrast and ' marbled' fabric, like my dyed fabrics, don't do what I wrote above.

3. This is a perfect method to dye pieces of fabric you want to use in a quilt. Most of all if you want to applique flowers or butterflies on your quilt or clothes.

4. About rinsing and washing.
* as my teacher said, the color will not stain other fabrics, if you rinse the soda ash out
* I saw that the fabrics continued to bleed (kind of) after I rinsed them and put them in a bowl during the process. As I have an external spin dryer (centrifuge) - something I could not live without - I spend all the fabrics after I rinsed them. It made my life much easier.

Why I have a spin dryer, even if my washing machine can spin dry? Because it is so easy for little hand washes, washing delicate wool fabrics or silks, ect.
It makes rinsing so easy: I rinse, I spin and then I rinse again. No more long rinses to get the soap out of the fabric.
I use it, too, if I need a piece of slightly wet fabric to iron some fabrics or if I do not want to use steam.

I am curious if some of you will want try this method to dye fabrics.
